100 Meters: Alice Coachman,
Tuskegee Institute, Alabama.
80 Meter Hurdles: Lillie Purifoy, Tuskegee
Institute, Alabama.
400 Meter Relay:
Tuskegee Institute (Lillie Purifoy,
Rowena Harrison, Lela Perry,
Alice Coachman).
The Women's National Championships were held on July 4, 1942,
at Ocean City, New Jersey. The
members of the Tuskegee Women's
Track and Field Team participated in this meet and for the
sixth consecutive year won the
national title. They won their first
championship in 1937 at Trenton.
In 1936 at Providence, Rhode
Island, the team tied for second
place with 15 points.
Several members of the team
would have represented the United
States in the Pan American Games
which were scheduled to be held
in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in October, 1942, but the meet was called
off on account of the war.
