A PRINCIPLE AVOWED.
"The first duty of every Frenchman, In whatever situation may place him, is towards his country;" says Napoleon's minister of foreign affairs.
How faithfully the French perform this duty, the least attentive observer of their conduct may easily perceive. They have performed it in Holland, in Switzerland, in Sweden, in Germany, in Prussia, in Russia, in Italy, in Portugal, and in Spain: And now we have got a young Prince of the blood, with ever so many assistants, to perform it here.
Let Americans remember these things, and let them beware lest the Frenchmen a-mongst us perform their duty towards their country in the same manner that they have wherever else they could get a footing, by bringing us first into alliance with, and then under subjection.
