Huguette Le May was slain, said Deputy Sheriff James O. Barker, and he thinks he knows who did it. This information was received at 1:30 yesterday by phone from the Miami Bureau of the AP which had talked with the Deputy in Miami.
At 2 p.m. a French Canadian voice muted by a distance of 2,000 miles, came in on the phone from Montreal. Le Petit Journal, large Montreal daily, was calling The Key West Citizen to find out if the grand jury had yet reported its verdict on the disappearance of Mrs. Le May, 21, Canadian beauty who disappeared off a Keys bridge on January 4.
The voice of the reporter, muffled by distance and a thick French accent, came through dimly. He wanted to know if there was any further news on the blood stained robe and shovel allegedly produced as evidence before the Grand Jury.
We informed him that the evidence presented by Barker would have to remain secret till Monday when the Grand Jury verdict is expected to be presented to Circuit Court Judge Aquilino Lopez, Jr.
Disappointed, the French-Canadian journalist asked us where he could find the uncle of Huguette Le May and Alfred Quenneville. We told him we had talked with the two men Thursday while they were waiting to testify before the 18 man grand jury in the County Court house. They said then that they were returning to Tavernier for a few days.
"Quenneville is one of the greatest detectives in all of Canada," our French-Canadian colleague said. "If I can find him perhaps he will tell me some clues."
We said we had a question: "Where is Mrs. Le May's husband - we hear he is en route to Florida. We hear that Deputy Barker is very eager, for him to come to Key West."
The Canadian replied: "He is certainly not en route to Key West as matter of fact, he is in the Laurentian mountains by car, those are mountains that are not so far away from Montreal."
What kind of a man is he, this 26-year-old husband of the missing beauty? "Before his marriage, George Le May was quite a play boy. you can say," replied Le Petit Journal reporter. The handsome young man who has black curly hair, dark eyes, is stocky and well built. He spoke very little English

the night that The Citizen saw him, January 5. His bride of six months spoke little English also.
The missing beauty walked off a Keys bridge on January 4 to change from light shorts into warmer clothes. She has never been seen from that time on, according to the office of the Monroe County Sheriff.
Meanwhile the family of Mrs. Le May wait eagerly for action by the Grand Jury on Monday.
Deputy Barker wants Le May in Key West and told the AP Friday:
"It looks like the only way the case can be solved at this time is through the presence and complete cooperation of George Le May."
Half an hour after Barker had so informed the AP, the French newspaperman called us telling us that Le May had gone north to the Laurentians instead of South to Key West. Le May, according to Mrs. Le May's brother Raymond Daoust, left Montreal by automobile.
Barker meanwhile said that he had not "received complete cooperation from George Le May or from Private Investigator Roger Nadeau who was hired by the family to help solve the case.
Grand jury action based on the and by Mrs. Le May's uncle, and Quenneville is expected Monday morning.
