CONCERNING THE ROBBERY SATURDAY NIGHT.

In another column is an account of brutal attack and robbery, on the Island of one of our citizens. As many depredations are committed in the Seventh ward, from month to month, and because of the comparative loneliness of some of the streets, it is a favorite locality for thieves and robbers to operate in, as there is less danger of detection. Would it not be well for our police to take greater precaution if possible, in preventing an increase of mischief in that section of the city? If we may be pardoned for the suggestion, one way which commends itself to us, and which would be of no additional expense to the city, would be to have the policeman whose duty it is to guard the Island, to patrol his beat regularly, say from one toll house to the other until he goes off duty. To make it more effectual, he should have the hearty co-operation of the bridge company. The toll keepers, who are supposed to know nearly everyone who crosses, should have instructions to keep a record of all suspicious or strange characters who pass over during the day or night and communicate the information to the policeman on duty. By such a system of carefulness the guardian could act intelligently and shrewdly, and bad characters would give the Island a wide berth and the good citizens of our rural district who haven't rows of houses, good sidewalks and bright friendly gas lamps to light and cheer them on, night be a safety that would be quite soothing to their nerves when going from or returning home late at nights.
