An unhappy accident took place yesterday in the afternoon, at the Branch Bank now building in Water-street, by which Mr. ABRAHAM KIP, one of the masons, lost his life, and Mr. Musgrove, a carpenter, was much hurt.
Mr. Kip was a faithful and industrious man, and has left a wife and several children to lament his premature departure.
To prevent misrepresentations, we have taken pains to collect the following impartial statement of the facts respecting this melancholy catastrophe, from spectators of the transaction, who have subscribed their names:—The deceased had ascended the roof, and went through it near the ridge pole of the house, in order to raise the tackle, which was erected to hoist the timber, and to fix it more permanent to hoist some stone for the back cornice, and being near the tackle staff, his feet slipped, and he came to the ground, striking a timber in the next story, which timber fell and wounded Mr. Musgrove.
It may be remarked with propriety, that the utmost caution has been observed by the managers of this building, since the commencement of it, and that this is the first accident that has happened, which accident was not for want of their care.
