Mr. EDITOR: SIR—In the Republican of yesterday, I observed some editorial remarks concerning a communication of Mr Underwood, of this city, which appeared a short time since in the Ohio Monitor. I had seen and read the communication, before I saw your notice of it; and was very much surprised that you should have given it a moment's consideration: I dare say you know your own business best; but it seems to me you have attached more consequence to it and its author than they merit. No reasonable man in this section of the State, will pay serious attention to the charges which it contains.
I have been long connected with the Democratic Party in this county, and have extensive opportunities of learning the views and opinions of our political friends, and I can assure you that your course with regard to the Trust Company, and all other subjects, affecting the interest of the party, has received general approbation, among those whose opinions are valuable. Your rejection of Mr Underwood's communication, was certainly very wise—if the communication which I read in the Post was a true copy of the one sent to you. It was, as you represent, a jacobinical article, without reason or argument to recommend it. I am one of those who was opposed to the charter of this institution in the commencement, and my mind in relation to the dangerous tendency of an institution of its extensive powers, has undergone no change. The more I see of its operations, the more I am convinced of the propriety of the stand which I assumed when, many of those who are most violently opposed to the Trust Company, at this time, were equally clamorous in favor of its Charter.
But, I am opposed to identifying the question with the party. It cannot be made a party question, for the reason that there are as many of the opposition who are against it, as there are of the friends of the administration.
My advice to you, as a friend of the People, is not to notice any thing which Mr Underwood has written, or may write upon the subject.
Yours, &c. COMMON SENSE.
