Republican Candidates.
We place at the head of our paper to-day the names of the candidates nominated at the late convention at Des Moines. The Convention was one of the largest--probably the largest that has ever been holden in the State. Nearly all the organized counties were represented, and the whole number of votes cast was 444. In view of the circumstances, this large attendance speaks well for the interest felt in the cause throughout the State, and taken in connection with the unanimity of feeling manifested at the convention, gives glorious assurance of success.
The ticket nominated is all that Republicans can wish. Samuel J. Kirkwood the nominee for Governor, has no superior, in capacity or popularity, in the State. He has served with distinction in the State Senate, is well conversant with State affairs, is a man of judgment and of honesty, a splendid speaker, and will carry the State by a larger majority than any Republican governor that has gone before him.
For Lieutenant Governor, the convention did equally well. Nicholas J. Rusch is a German by birth, but for a number of years has resided in Iowa. He is one of the largest farmers in the State, possesses a gentlemanly, pleasing intelligent exterior, commands the largest respect wherever known, is an able, eloquent speaker, fully conversant with our institutions, and has represented Scott County in our State Senate for several years. He is of the Carl Schurz school of men-men who are using the vast influence their talents have given them over their countrymen, for the latter's elevation-for the inculcation of a knowledge and love of our institutions. They are men who hate tyranny and love liberty, and are never so false to humanity as to lend aid or countenance to the cause of human slavery. Mr. Rusch will do credit to the Republican cause.
For Judges of the Supreme Court, the convention have presented the names of Ralph P. Lowe, L. D. Stockton, and Caleb Baldwin. The first gentleman is our present able state executive. He was for a number of years Judge of the first Judicial District, and gave, in that position, the same universal satisfaction that he has more recently as Governor. L. D. Stockton is at present on the Supreme Bench, and has made a most acceptable judge. Caleb Baldwin is a resident of Council Bluffs, and is one of the most popular men on the Missouri slope. Of his legal abilities we know nothing, but from the favor with which his name was received in the convention, we have no doubt that his qualifications for the position are all that the people can ask.
The platform, too, is just what every Republican would have it-there is nothing that we would have subtracted. It denounces extravagance in public expenditures, and the modern democratic principle of no prohibition of Slavery in the territories. It proclaims liberty of conscience, equality of rights, and the free exercise of the right of suffrage, and reiterates the sentiment "Land for the Landless." It opposes the efforts of the Southern Democracy for the attainment of a Slave Code for the territories, and for the revival of the foreign Slave Trade. It denounces the administration for refusing protection to our naturalized citizens abroad, and asserts, for our State policy, a strict economy in public expenditures, a prompt and faithful discharge of official duties, and reform in the system of county administration.
