A Letter from Virginia.

Sandy Plains, Patrick Co., Va., May 8, 1879.

Editors Sentinel: It seems that we are living in a time that is full of events; and while the whole world is in commotion, I thought I would cast in a little mite for fear I should be found standing alone. While I have nothing specially in view, I would like to mention through the columns of your paper, if you think it of any worth, that some time about the first of May, 1879, I took a small tour of travel from my residence in Virginia. My business called me through North Carolina, and in Stokes county; and my admiration was never more excited than when we found ourselves in the neighborhood called "Town Fork Creek." There the people seem to be enjoying all the facilities which nature has furnished their lands—fertility, perfect adaptation to all kinds of grains and tobacco, and many indications of valuable minerals. But the most endearing to me was the hospitality of the people toward strangers. I had a few days' sojourn with William Johnson, an old soldier of the war of 1812, residing on "Town Fork." I shall always cherish with fond recollection the kindness of that venerable old man and his son and family, who, I believe reside at the same place; and if I never see them again, I shall surely pray for their welfare in all time to come.

Very respectfully, yours,
WM. P. FLOYD
