Average Length of Life in U.S. Increases To Record High of 68 Years, Ewing Says

Average length of life in the United States has increased to a record high of nearly 68 years, Federal Security Administrator Oscar R. Ewing announced recently.

The new figure, based on final 1949 vital statistics compiled by the Public Health Service, shows a gain of almost half a year over the average lifetime indicated by 1948 death rates.

White women on the average live longer than any other group, outliving white men by more than five years, Mr. Ewing said. The average lifetime expected for white women at birth is 71½ years, while the average for white men is 65 years, 11 months. Negroes and other nonwhite groups have a shorter average life--58½ years for nonwhite men, and 62 years, 11 months for nonwhite women. Altho white persons live longer than nonwhite the difference has been sharply reduced.--Federal Security Agency.
