Extract of a private letter from Paris, dated May 29.

This age will be remembered by the latest posterity, as the era of new and wonderful discoveries.--A person who, no doubt "deals with the devil," has lately set up a shop of Divination, in the Pythian style. By means of some powerful conjurations, he contrives to bring before his customers, such persons as are absent, no matter for the distance. They cannot remain above a quarter of an hour, but in this short space many things may be said and done.--Now for a proof of his skill. --Sometime ago a man of the first rank, having an important secret to impart to a lady then in London, he applied to the Conjurer, who, after many intreaties, consented to grant his request. In an instant presto be gone! --Lo! the lady made her appearance, but the shock was so sudden that the gentleman was frightened into a fainting fit. The quarter of an hour elapsed and the vision disappeared. By the next post the gentleman had a letter from the identical lady, complaining that she had been lately affected by disagreeable dreams, and that on the preceding Tuesday, (the very day of the conjuration) she thought herself in his company, but saw him seated in an arm chair, with his hand over his face, and himself in a deep swoon. She concluded, by requesting him to quiet her fears, and let her know the real state of his health,--Sure no inquisitor of the past, present, or future times, would doom a man to the stake for disbelieving the story; improbable as it may appear, at present it engrosses all the conversation of our fashionable circles.
