Paris Prepares for Roosevelt
Paris, April 20.--Despite grumblings of disapproval from the royalists and clericals, Paris is today preparing to give a great and glorious welcome to Col. Theodore Roosevelt.

The distinguished republican from overseas will again stand in democratic soil when he reaches the capital of the great European republic, and this fact alone will give his visit a significance not possible in the monarchical nations he will visit.

Although the clerical press continues to denounce Col. Roosevelt for the Vatican incident, and his hobnobbing with the Masons, other journals are filled with descriptions of the coming visitor praises of his character.

The official program will begin Saturday, when Col Roosevelt will be received by the Society Sciences Morales et Politiques, of which he is a member That same afternoon the former President of the United States will deliver a lecture at the Sorbonne in the presence of President Fallieres on "The Duty of a Citizen of a Republic."

In the evening Col. Roosevelt will be entertained by the Academie.

There will be a banquet, after which the former President will be presented to prominent members of the French universities at a general reception.

The French government is anxious to receive the former president of the United States with the highest honors French society is prepared to lionize him: the literary philosophical, geographical and scientific bodies all desire to entertain him, and the American colony would like to give a grand banquet in his honor. But Mr. Roosevelt has discreetly allowed it to be understood that he desires particularly to avoid any appearance of ostentation and that he will preserve, as far as possible, merely the role of a man of learning, in which capacity he accepted the invitation to lecture at the Sorbonne extended to him through Ambassador Jusserand while he still occupied the White House.

Mr. Roosevelt's visit to Paris therefore, will be devoid of the spectacular features which characterized ex-President Grant's visit here at the time of his tour around the world. Mr. Grant while the official guest of the nation, was received almost like a reigning sovereign.

Mr. Roosevelt's wishes will be carried out in the main, but the government has declined to forego the honor of entertaining him and the ex-President has accepted the invitation of President Fallieres to be his guest at a dinner at the Elysee Palace.
