Wilmington, N. C.-Sam Wah, a Chinese tenant farmer of New Hanover County, wants to go back to the land of his ancestors for a visit. When he made application at the local immigration offices for a return certificate to get back into the United States he was informed it was necessary for him to have a wife here and own property or have $1,000 in secured debts. Wah has neither wife nor property, but he made a statement that an American woman in Newark, N. J., owes him $1,000 with interest since 1908.
He said the money was loaned in San Francisco to the woman, whose name local immigration authorities would not divulge, in order that she might go to China to do missionary work.
Letters from the woman saying she would meet him in New York to appear with him at Ellis Island for further inquiry were exhibited.
Wah has left for New York.
