Sunset Cox, whose death was recently reported by 'The Globe,' used to say some undignified things while temporarily occupying the Speaker's chair. His humor was, however, never of that kind that was calculated to cause disorder, but was innocent and harmless and productive of a great good feeling among the members.
On one occasion, during the debate on the cotton tax, Mr. Cox was in the chair, when a North Carolinian Congressman arose and interrupted a member from our sister State from the south of us.
"The gentleman from North Carolina desires to ask the gentleman from South Carolina a question," said Chairman Cox, solemnly, "and," continuing, "if it is the Same old question it is in order."
In the explosion of laughter that followed, the gentleman from North Carolina forgot utterly the interrogation he wished to propound to his brother member from South Carolina.
