PROPAGANDA
Let's keep our fingers crossed, praying for victory by Great Britain. Let's give her every help we can short of war. Let's arm against the threat of dictatorial invasion of our own hemisphere.
But, for the love of life and liberty, let's do these things with our eyes open. Let's not talk ourselves into believing in fairy stories. Let's evaluate propaganda as such, regardless of its source.
And let's remember that the man who utters propaganda is often ignorant himself of the fact that it is propaganda.
There's the oft-repeated prediction, for instance, that closer economic cooperation between Great Britain and the United States after this war will further strengthen our international position.
Hooey!
If Britain loses the war, there can be no such thing as "closer economic cooperation." If Britain wins, there'll be no such thing as a bloc of dictator states against whom to cooperate. If Britain loses, we'll have to stand directly upon our own feet. If she wins, we'll be competing with her again.
So let's resolve right now to begin the task of depending entirely upon ourselves -not on "closer economic cooperation" with anybody.
