County Men Enlist In Army, Air Force

Five men from Columbus County were enlisted in the U. S Army and U. S. Air Force during the week of October 3rd through 8th. M-Sgt. Emery G. Murray of the Wilmington Recruiting Station announced yesterday. These men were Robert C. Simmons, 102 E. Webster St.; Eldon I. G. Vereen, 403 S. Franklin St.; Hammond, 407 Pinkney St.; Jack Nicholas Ward, Route 1, Tabor City; and Gleon Fowler, Route 1, Hallsboro. Simmons and Vereen enlisted in the Air Force and were sent to Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas for thirteen weeks of basic training. Hammond was sent to Fort Jackson, South Carolina for fourteen weeks of basic training. Fowler and Ward, veterans were sent to Fort Jackson for refresher training and assignment. Sgt. Rowland, the recruiting Sergeant for Columbus County, may be contacted in Room 1, in the Whiteville post office any day Monday through Friday between 10:00 a. m. and 3:00 p. m. He can give interested individual any information they may desire relative to enlistments and reenlistments in the Army and Air Force.
