CHARLESTON, Dec. 9.

The proprietors of the bridge erected across Charles-river having purchased the hull of a large prize ship Lord Howe, for the purpose of sinking her in such a position in the river, as to defend the bridge from the ice: on Wednesday the attempt was made, when by some mistake in the conductors, she was unfortunately sunk in the channel, where her stem and stern just appear at low water. She went down so unexpectedly and rapidly, that two men, who were assisting, had no time to quit her, but being left in the water, were saved by swimming till taken up by the boats.
