Event Details
Mr. Jacob Durvee of Dutchess county went to New-York in a sloop with a Negro man to assist in navigating. The Negro refused to return. Durvee and the master tied the Negro, carried him by cart to the water side, put him on board, and set sail. They were boarded by a barge with a Negro Colonel and Hessian soldiers who treated them insolently, obliged the sloop to return to New York, seized her, released the Negro, and imprisoned Durvee and the master. Large bail offered but refused. The account is corroborated and causes speculation.
