We shall soon have it determined, we presume, whether or not the Butternut opposition to arming negroes results from their sympathy with the rebels or their resolve to keep the miserable "niggers" in slavery. If they are opposed to arming negroes to assist in suppressing the rebellion, of course, if they have a single drop of loyal blood in their veins, they will be still more indignant at any attempt of the rebels to use them in shooting the Union men of the North! Our Butternut politicians won't stand any such nonsense. Just now they are the special friends of the soldiers. They have warned them of the degradation of bearing arms by the side of the "niggers." It was an enormous outrage to arm the slave to fight on our side. They were mere savages and would commit the most diabolical and bloody deeds on the unfortunate and innocent men, women and children of re beldom. These would dishonor and disgrace our soldiers, and therefore these ought to frown upon the effort to make soldiers of those who, being black, "have no rights which a white man is bound to respect," and being slaves ought therefore always to continue in that blissful condition. Now, Jeff., having found white men too few, and having invoked the gods and other foreign powers in vain, at last resorts to the "nigger." He, the rebels having always lived by the labor of the African, now wants the African to do their fighting! He will exhort them to kill, to slaughter our unfortunate soldiers who are to be exposed to these savages. The Butternuts won't stand that! It violates their "principles." They have protested again and again against all such "savagery." They won't endure it from Jeff. or from any one! Not they! They will at once shoulder their muskets and move off to the war themselves! They are opposed to "that sort of thing." That will elevate the "nigger" too much. How they will curse the rebels! They, too, have gone into partnership with the "nigger." Could anything worse offend a Copperhead?
