Full Text

Dec. 12. We hear that the countermanding of the Preparations that were making in the Hay-market on Account of the Birth of the Duke of Burgundy, is owing to a well-grounded Apprehension that the Company at the Entertainment would be but very thin; the Naval Armaments making, in the Ports of France, and the Intrigues carried on by that Court with divers Powers on the Continent, giving so much Umbrage to some Persons in the highest Spheres, that they have resolv'd to partake of no Rejoicings on the above-mention'd Account; and as their Example would be generally follow'd, his Excellency does not think it worth his while to make an Entertainment for the Mob only.

Event Details

Preparations in the Hay-market for an entertainment celebrating the birth of the Duke of Burgundy were countermanded because of apprehensions of thin company; French naval armaments in their ports and intrigues with continental powers caused umbrage among high persons, leading them to resolve against rejoicings, and his Excellency deemed it unworthy to entertain only the mob.
