The Election.

Thursday, for selectmen, &c., resulted in the choice of the Democratic ticket by an overwhelming majority of 200. For selectmen—J. E. Peterson, J. J. Paysinger and J. Paull. Mayor—G. M. Girardeau; Constable—B. M. Blassingame; Clerk—J. I. Housell.

The Radicals polling 60 votes and the Democrats 250.

We have never seen a more orderly and quiet election anywhere. Many of the leading colored Radicals, we are told, voted the Democratic ticket.

We congratulate Township No. 1 upon its selection of the officers called to preside over its destinies, but regret the supposed necessity which gave rise to the "new order" of things. Massachusetts, with her isms and laws, creeps apace upon all that once was pure in Carolina, or her ideas, principles policy and traditions are being overlaid by a mongrel brood of moral (?) ideas.

We are now in the County, O, with its myriad strange ties to be copied and revolutionized. The County is to be divided and subdivided into a labyrinth of townships, with a large number of officials, heavy taxation, &c.

The township lines are to be surveyed and the selectmen, in addition to their duties as general supervisors, will assess properties and values, &c., the Clerk will keep the Township record and combine with his office that of Treasurer. He will also administer the oath of office to his other incumbents. The Constable's duties are pertinent to all.

This change, will work badly. Single Counties of many of the Eastern States where the above laws are in vogue, are as rich as our entire State. And while the ratio of taxation up there is light—population being large—our taxation will be a grievously heavy burden to bear.
