Rocky Marciano will fly to Akron from his Florida home to attend the Boys' Town of Italy dinner-dance Sunday, May 1 in the Sheraton Hotel.
Confirmation of the undefeated former world heavyweight boxing champion's trip to the Rubber Capital was reported received by Dom D'Alessio, president of the D'Alessio Construction Co. and chairman of the $25-a-plate event.
D'Alessio quoted Marciano as saying he would be "most happy to participate in this project which has done so much for thousands of war-torn Italy's orphans and for the preservation of democracy in a land most gravely threatened by Communism."
Proceeds from the dinner-dance will be presented to another guest, Rt. Rev. Msgr. John Patrick Carroll-Abbing, founder and president of the nine Boys' Towns, one Girls' Town and 30 nurseries, with headquarters in Rome.
The funds will specifically go toward the construction of a 10th Boys' Town building to be named after the State of Ohio. Each of the other nine are also named in honor of American states, where similar events have been conducted in the last 15 years.
D'Alessio said "more than 30,000 young men, polished and skilled in many trades, have already been turned out, deeply grateful to the United States for their new lives."
