Have Narrow Escape
Dr. and Mrs. Vincent Hume and five children narrowly escaped what could have been a tragedy this past Sunday afternoon when the Jeep station wagon in which they were crossing Lake Wasilla broke through the ice at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Quick thinking on the part of the couple got their children, including their seven-week-old baby, and themselves out of the vehicle through the windows. Before Mrs. Hume had gotten out of the car the water had seeped in as deep as her knees and in a matter of minutes after the family were out on the ice the Jeep sank in approximately seven feet of water. The accident happened about one half mile from shore and because it was dark, was not witnessed, although Dr. Marshall Simpson, who was walking his dog at the time noticed the car lights from shore as the vehicle sank and had started to investigate when he met the Humes heading for the lodge.
Mrs. Hume said she was willing the accident be reported in the newspaper so that others would know that the ice on the entire lake is not safe for vehicle travel.
Salvage attempts will be made to recover the Jeep.
