Andrew Westra, Lafayette Road, and Bob Martin, South Walnut St., both seniors at London High School, improved the time during their Easter holiday and took off early after school was released, for Washington, D. C. in the Westra family car.
They stopped at Ft. Necessity, Pa., en route, and after arriving in the National Capitol didn't miss a trick, according to the description of their trip as relayed by Andrew's sister, Mrs. Robert McMurray of the Lafayette Road address.
Washington, they said, was perfectly beautiful: really put on a show for its thousands of visitors. They saw many of the important spots, including the Washington and Lincoln Memorials: the Tidal Basin with its magnificent Cherry trees in full flower; Mt. Vernon and numerous other places that intrigued their fancy.
But the crowning thrill came Sunday morning when they went by for a view of the Easter Egg Rolling on the White House lawn. It was their good fortune to get a position close enough to President and Mrs. Eisenhower for Andrew to get several camera shots of them. The President, who was holding his small granddaughter aloft in his arms that she might not be crushed by the great throngs who crashed the children's party and might get a better view of what was going on, was just like any other grandfather, says Andrew. He got so interested and excited by the whole performance that the little lady almost slipped through his arms on two or three occasions.
