CHEHALIS, Wash., June 12.—The State Republican Convention was opened in this city on Saturday. Leaders of the G. O. P. from all parts of Washington were present, and the local hotels are crowded with delegates. The convention was called to order at 10 a. m., and after the invocation by a local clergyman, the chairman introduced Ray Greenwood of Kitsap County, who delivered the key-note address. The address was closely listened to and frequently applauded. The convention hall shook with enthusiastic approval when Greenwood declared that Progressivism and Americanism were the controlling factors in the national policy of the Republican Party. Following the lead of Senator Medill McCormick who is endeavoring to revive the League of Nations issue for the purpose of defeating the Democrats in the fall elections, Greenwood bitterly assailed the Wilson administration for its efforts to force us into the league. The league issue was again referred to when the speaker was eulogizing Senator Miles Poindexter. He stated that Poindexter's fight against the league was the greatest achievement of his career. A letter from Senator Poindexter was read by the speaker in which the senator took a few falls out of the league agreement and the Versailles treaty. Continuing, Greenwood advocated the passage of a strong Anti-Narcotic Law, and praised Congressman Miller of this state whose name is attached to the present Narcotic bill now pending in the Senate and which has passed the House. Greenwood placed the State organization definitely behind the ex-service men in their demand for the immediate passage by Congress of the Bonus bill. The national Republican administration was emphatically endorsed, stricter immigration laws recommended, and the State organization was placed solidly behind the demand for more federal aid for irrigable lands. The action of the county prosecuting attorneys in proceeding to enforce the State Anti-Alien Land law, in order to force the Japanese out of their possession of rich agricultural lands, was approved. On the conclusion of Greenwood's speech the convention proceeded to get down to real business by electing Frank R. Jeffrey of Benton County, United States district attorney for Eastern Washington, as permanent chairman. The first action of the delegates was to vote in favor of the repeal of the State poll tax law. This was followed by the adoption of a resolution upholding and approving the present primary election system. A motion endorsing the State Anti-Alien Land law, offered from the floor, was passed almost unanimously. The platform as finally adopted contained a strong, unqualified endorsement of both State and National administrations, but went on record as in favor of further economies in all government operations in order to reduce the tax burden.
