UNCLE SAM TO TAKE SIDE IN IRISH FIGHT

Government Will Make Clear Its Attitude Toward Latest Developments in Irish Situation

Washington, May 20.—There are indications that the American government soon will make clear its attitude toward the latest developments in the Irish situation. Resolutions adopted by recent mass meetings in this country, and the reported approaching visit to Washington of the lord mayor of Dublin are understood to have impressed upon administration officials the necessity of some action.

State department officials declined flatly today to discuss a report from London that some of the evidence upon Sinn Fein leaders were arrested had been gathered here. In any statement that may be made regarding Ireland it is said, the United States government will take a firm position, with due regard to the fact that American soldiers are fighting with the British in France against the common enemy.
