Our County Nominees.
The county convention did its work in a straightforward, business-like and sensible manner. It was composed of the best manhood of noble old Kennebec whose patriotism never nods, and the ticket it selected and presents to us is made up of good men and true, who are entirely worthy of the confidence reposed in them by the convention, and whose nomination the people will ratify by an old-fashioned Kennebec majority.
Mr. May, who was re-nominated for Senator, and Mr. Abbot, who was nominated as his colleague, are gentlemen who have already held various important trusts with benefit and satisfaction to the public and credit to themselves.
Mr. Baker's nomination as candidate for Judge of Probate is gratifying, we think, to all good men of all parties, in the county. He has performed the duties of that position several terms in a manner that has seemed to be above criticism. and it has been largely through his suggestion and instrumentality that the probate laws of our State have been so beneficially amended within the past two or three years.
There was a friendly contest for nomination for Commissioner as there was for second Senator. Mr. Hawes was the choice of the convention for three reasons: first, his fitness: second, his popularity, and thirdly and chiefly, because the convention thought it proper to recognize the propriety of "rotation." Mr. Rollins has made an excellent Commissioner, and for his valuable services to the county during the past six years, he receives the gratitude and thanks which are ever accorded a faithful public officer by those whose good-will and approbation are desirable or valuable.
The nomination of Mr. Hewins as Register of Probate, by acclamation, was merely another very complimentary endorsement of that gentleman by his fellow-citizens for an office requiring patience, industry and fidelity. There is no citizen of the county more unflinching in integrity, more correct and methodical in his duties, or who would make a more accommodating and fit County Treasurer than Alanson Starks, who was nominated unanimously. His jealousy in regard to the interests of the county, as connected with his office, has long warmly commended him to his fellow citizens.
Maj. Fogler has made a model Register of Deeds: he was a good soldier- which was the peculiar consideration that told in favor of his first nomination.
In Mr. Barton as Sheriff the people have had a faithful, worthy officer, in a responsible position, whose services the convention esteemed it necessary to retain-which action the people will cheerfully ratify.
Fellow republicans of Kennebec!-Let us, with this ticket headed by SIDNEY PERHAM and JAMES G. BLAINE, roll up a majority that will not only bury from our sight forever the dry bones of Greeley Hunkerism, but that will astonish our fellow-republicans throughout the State and bring new honor to Loyal Old Kennebec!
