THE CENTRAL DEMOCRAT.
The new editor of the Democrat, M. Brewer, Esq., formerly an old line whig, talks truth thus:
The Democracy the only hope of the Country.—For the first time in the history of our country do we behold the popular branch of our federal legislature in the hands of the Abolitionists They have a clear majority of the members of the Thirty-fourth Congress. An ultra abolitionist occupies the Speaker's chair—the committees of Congress are all in the hands of the abolitionists and niggerstealers. The Abolitionists have thus acquired the power and the means of giving tone, shape, temper to the federal legislation of the country for the current year.
But fortunately for the honor and the integrity of the Union, fortunately for the South, we have an Executive whose sympathies are all with the South, and a Senate of National, Conservative, Democratic material. The country looks to the Senate and the President in this emergency as the only hope against Abolition measures. We shall never despair of the republic as long as there is a Democratic Senate at Washington to stay the progress of fanaticism—and this is to day the sentiment of the great mass of Southern know nothings.
If we cannot call upon them to unite with the Democracy in the coming struggle against Black Republicanism, we can certainly exhort the many Old Line Whigs throughout the country to do so, and they will do it. We have heard many express themselves, they regard the Democracy in this crisis as the only hope for the South.
