Alas! poor Mr. Touchstone,
What will you be at next--would be the natural inquiry of any one, who has been in the habit of reading this man's paper for some time past? What new efforts of Yankee ingenuity, will you next exhibit? You chanted doggerel until your subscribers declared that they 'would as leave hear, "a dry wheel grate on its axle-tree." You then tried prose--it is true, you employed every variety to render it agreeable. You defended the Patriots--scourged the Banks--lashed the Brokers--praised the Demo's--abused the Fed's--flung a firebrand into private life--lent your little influence to prop up a rotten institution--& raked from the filthy kennels of a grog shop, the most infamous libels against the fairest members in society. All this to be sure was new, and poured into the columns of your chronicle, a flood of "original matter" that really "astonished the natives"; But in this you acted without that foresight, which is the usual characteristic of your countryman. You should have paused, before you hired your pen to the Teller of a Bank, and reflected upon the nature of the interest you were opposing. You should have made yourself well acquainted with facts, before you assailed private individuals. But you entered upon it "unguibus et rostro"--with a fire and temper that well become your late profession. In the effervescence of your zeal, you parted with your usual discrimination, and paid as little regard to truth, as you did to policy. You have however only succeeded in producing a strong feeling of opposition to yourself, which must finally destroy you. In the mean time, permit us to repeat the interrogation--what will you be at next?
