Oh My! Federal Use Tax On Cars up For Sale Again

Information was received this morning at the local Post Office on the $5-a-year federal use tax on automobiles which go on sale June 10.

Federal officials indicated at Washington that the 'nuisance levy' would be a fixture for the duration. The first full $5 fee due July 1 is expected to bring in at least $150,000,000 even though some drivers have put their cars on blocks because of the tire shortage and gasoline rationing in the east (Car owners bought their first stamps last February at bargain rate of $2.09 but they are valid only until July 1.
