More Money For Better Police

Though we're a little confused as to the kinds of glasses the members of the Grand Jury were wearing when they looked into certain other areas, we're in full agreement with the recommendation to hire more policemen and to up the pay of those already on the force. Most of them, that is.

Policing in Atlanta should certainly be a full-time job, with pay respectable enough to attract the best possible men. And standards high enough to squeeze out the few free-swinging sluggers, the trigger happy and the coarse mounted who besmirch the reputation of the entire department.

Naturally, though the Jury did not specifically say so, we are sure they would have new men hired and those now on the force promoted on the basis of merit rather than race.
