In the Senate of this state, on Friday last, pursuant to notice previously given, the hon. Mr. Hichborn moved a resolution in the following words: —
"That a committee be appointed to prepare an address to the President of the United States, congratulating him on his accession to the chief magistracy of the Union; declaring our unequivocal approbation of the true system of republican principles, which he has assumed as the basis of his administration: and assuring him of our cordial support in effectuating the great objects of national economy, without which, no people can long retain their morality or freedom."
Which resolution he read in his place, and the same being seconded, Mr. Hichborn proceeded to assign the reasons which had induced him to introduce the motion. Whereupon a long and interesting debate ensued, which continued until after the usual hour of adjournment; when the further consideration of the question was adjourned to the next day.
On Saturday the motion was resumed, and further debates were had thereon, which continued until the hour of adjournment.
The speakers for the motion were Messrs. Hichborn, Skinner, Bidwell, Hull, Hill, F. L. Austin, & Bowdoin, and against it Messrs. Treadwell, Titcomb, Thompson, Hayward, and Brigham. A sketch of the debate shall be given in our next paper, having at present only room to observe, that we have seldom witnessed in a deliberative assembly, a debate conducted with more candor, intelligence and manly reasoning than was displayed on this occasion by those in favor of the motion. It may safely be left to the public sentiment to estimate the comparative merit and talents between them and their opponents, which was there discovered; and we most heartily congratulate the republicans of Massachusetts upon that decisive weight of ability, learning and eloquence which they at this time possess in the councils of the Commonwealth.
The question was taken by Yeas and Nays, which were Yeas 14—Nays 19.
