A Kentucky correspondent of a Cincinnati paper relates the following:
While on the other side of the river my attention was attracted to a quiet group coming up the hill. First were two intelligent looking Contrabands, next, a little 'go cart,' drawn by a mule, in which was a female slave and about a dozen little negroes, carefully wrapped in sundry and diverse rags. An Uncle Tom sort of a chap, with a Miss Dinah, brought up the rear. As they came by I addressed Tom—
'Well, Uncle, where did your party come from?'
'We's from do town, dar, sah.'
'And where are you going?'
'Giwine home, Sah.'
'Then you do not live in the village?'
'No, we lib right obe ryonder, bout two mile; de secesh dray us from home.'
'Ah! well, now stop a minute and tell us all about it.'
'Dat I de, sute, masst, Jim, (as the leading male of the cart) you go on wid de wagon, an' I kotch you before you gits hobe. Now I tells you, massa, all about um. My massi am Union, an' so is all de niggers. Yesterday massi wor away in de town, an' de firs' ting we know, long come two or tree hundred ob dem seeesh. ers, on horses, an' looking like cut-throats. Golly, but de galls wor scared. Jus' right back b s wor de Union soldiers—God bless, (reverentially,) for dey keep de secesh from killin' nigger.' De gals know dat, an' when dey see de secesh comin' dey pitch de little nigger in de go-cart, an' den we all broke for de Union sol-diers.'
'So you are not afraid of the Union soldiers?'
'God bless you, massa, nebber. Nigger gets abind dem Union soldiers, Secesh nebber gets um. Secesh steal nigger—Union man nebber steal um. Dat's a fac', massa.'
And, with a smile on his face, the clever old darkey bid me good morning, and trotted on after the go-cart. The negroes outside of our lines break for our pickets when they hear the Secesh coming, so fearful are they of being stolen by the thieves.
