FACED COURT FOR VARIOUS OFFENSES

Long List of Offenders Some Pay Fines, Others Do Time in County Jail.

The past week has been fairly busy in justice court, quite a large number of men having been arrested and tried before Judge Keo Leroux. Several paid their fines while others unable or unwilling to pay the amount charged, are serving terms in the county jail.

Albin Olene, arrested in the southeast part of the county, was charged with maintaining a liquor nuisance. He was assessed a fine of $100 and costs or sentenced to 60 days in the county jail. He is serving the time.

Gust Moberg of Calumet was committed by Judge Lee Hurd of that village when convicted of being drunk and disorderly. He will be an involuntary guest of the county for 30 days.

Thos. Hines of Ball Club was arrested, charged with maintaining a liquor nuisance. He was given the choice of paying a fine of $100 and costs or serving 60 days in the county jail and decided to pay the fine.

Robert Maddox, who lives near Johnson lake, was arrested, charged with assault. The complaining witness was his wife. He was found guilty and given the alternative of serving 30 days in the county jail or paying $100 fine. He is still in jail.

Nick Cortes of Nashwauk pleaded guilty to a liquor nuisance charge and paid a fine of $100 and costs. The same penalty was visited upon John Johnson of Grand Rapids township. He paid a fine of $100 and costs when he pleaded guilty to a liquor nuisance.

Two more drew sentences of 15 days each in the county jail. Francis Smith of Grand Rapids was sentenced on an assault charge and Gus Anderson of Pengilly on the charge of being drunk and disorderly.
