Democrats, judging from their own feelings, affect to think that office is the sole aim of Federal struggles. No such thing. Let the party now in power select from themselves, patriotic, virtuous and intelligent individuals, to fill the various offices; let them administer the government with purity, justice and impartiality; let them restore to the people their freedom and equal rights; let them extend the hand of protection to the suffering community, rather than that of intolerance & persecution; let them bring back the country to the proud standing of honor and prosperity where the administration of Washington placed her; in short, let them only do their duty, and the federalists will cordially acquiesce, and be satisfied. Ah! but, says a snarling democrat, that would be restoring the federal administration. And this is the only objection they can bring to the expediency of the measure: so that we must continue some time longer—as we are.
