COLUMBIA, S. C.—The University of South Carolina, chartered in 1801 by the General Assembly of South Carolina, is the oldest state-established and fully state-supported institution of higher learning in the United States. It opened its doors Jan. 10, 1805.

COLUMBIA, S. C.—In 1805 the first University of South Carolina students were housed and met classes in two historic buildings, DeSaussure and Rutledge colleges, which still stand and serve their original purposes. DeSaussure is used by the language department, and Rutledge serves as the campus chapel.
