Full Text

ALEXANDRIA. Sept. 19.

In consequence of an alarming contagious disease
now prevalent in the city of Philadelphia, as well
as in several of the West-India islands, the corporation
have adopted measures for preventing its introduction
into this place. As soon as the necessary
arrangement can be made, it is said that the law of
the state respecting the performance of quarantine,
by vessels coming from places where the disorder
prevails, will be put in complete operation. In the
mean time, the directions of the police have provided
for the present emergency by a legal extension
of the powers vested in them by the act of incorporation.
A look-out boat is constantly employed to
prohibit vessels bound hither, from coming within
one mile of the port, till they undergo an examination
by the health officer. From such precautions,
there is reason to hope that the inhabitants of this
town will still preserve that great proportion of
health which they have hitherto enjoyed.
