The truth out at last, or Religion truly in danger from the leaders of the Democratic faction.
THE editor of the democratic paper, published in this town, called the Argus, has boldly ventured to proclaim the sentiments of the adherents to the present anti-christian administration, in regard to the ministers of the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ, by the insertion of a piece in his paper of the 21st inst. signed " a humble Methodist Teacher." Whether the author is a real Methodist or not, may be a question-- If he be, it is hoped that that class of men will discountenance the publication, lest it should be thought they are disposed to disaffect the people to those regular establishments, which have. the greatest tendency to promote Religion and good order in society. Or that they are combined to promote those democratic principles which if persevered in, will e'er long destroy the peace and happiness, as well as the honor and prosperity of the country.
In that publication, which points to one in the Palladium, on the subject of religion, the writer says of Christians--
" They may now plainly discover the designs of the Political Priests, the mere creatures of State Government, whose whole aim is to hush the people into silence and acquiescence to the. tyranny and slavery of wicked rulers, with whom these wicked Priests have ever been in league to destroy the rights of the people.
This mere political Priesthood are the agents of Satan to enslave mankind ; the most wicked and remorseless Tyrants of the Earth have found it impossible to enslave man by any other means but by uniting with such Priests-with their aid the most sacred rights of man have been easily seized. These men have wickedly instructed their dupes that God required of man passive obedience to the most bloody and savage Tyrants, thus have they profaned Religion, (which is intended to bless mankind, both here & hereafter) to the vile purpose of Slavery and Misery. A union of Church with State is more destructive to the happiness of man than any other conspiracy since the first Apostacy and union of fallen Angels. True Christians have but one opinion of those Priests who wickedly prate about a union of Church and State-- they believe them to be only wolves in sheep's clothing ; they are mere hirelings ; they have no call to preach the Gospel except what they fancy they derive from a false crucifixion."
Here, readers, you discover the cloven foot; by this publication you may judge of the principles of those who are devoted to that infidel who is at the helm of government, and who are duped by those who profess. an attachment to him from motives of self-interest.
This discovery. it is hoped will open the eyes of those who have not viewed through the medium of reason and sound judgment, the cloud which has overshadowed our once happy country; & will lead men of greater abilities than the writer of this, to develope the designs of its enemies, and establish a discerning power in the minds of its friends.
