Divide And Conquer
Whose slogan?
The Nazis'.
Respecting the Allies. Create mistrust and suspicion between Soviet Russia and the Western democracies—all will be lost that has been won, and there will be another world war. And that at no distant date.
It's a shrewd policy and often succeeds. It assumes a large amount of stupidity and more narrow-minded selfishness on the part of the nations victimized. The assumption, alas, is all too well founded. All people who earnestly desire peace achieved by mutual good will, mutual understanding and consequent unity of action will give the Nazi propaganda experts to know that such divisive tactics will not succeed.
Let us note the parallel afforded by the enemies of organized labor. Whatever they profess themselves to be, whatever they think themselves to be, they are Nazis, after the pattern of Hitler's destroyers. In Nazi-fascism they are well schooled. Divide and conquer the Labor Movement; keep the labor organizations divided, widen the breach: that is their policy. And to this end they work their wits.
Against the devices of these expert enemies the workers must present a solid front of common aim and purpose, of goodwill and understanding. There can be no greater calamity than civil war. Internal strife saps the strength, whereas common battle shoulder to shoulder against the same foe adds strength to strength.
To our leaders and officials we say: "Listen to the rank and file of us unionists, whether our organization is AFL or CIO or UMWA. Our cause is one. We are one in spirit. We rise and fall, we prosper or suffer reverse together. We all belong to one movement. Let there be harmony, unity, and power in that movement, and we will march forward to our goals."
