At a meeting of the merchants and other inhabitants of this city, held the 15th inst. at the Exchange, in consequence of a notification for that purpose, by direction of the Chamber of Commerce, and many other citizens; the meeting proceeded to take into consideration, the embarrassed and critical Situation to which the trade of America is reduced, for want of an adequate power in the Supreme Authority of the United States to regulate the same--In consequence whereof, the following gentlemen were appointed a Committee to correspond with the several States in the Union, and the different counties in this state, on the interesting subject of the trade of the United States; in hopes that by a free and reciprocal communication of opinions and sentiments thereon it may prove means of bringing about a measure absolutely indispensable to the true interest of America--that of vesting Congress with full and ample powers to regulate the commerce of the said United States:--William Constable, Jacob Morris, Eleazer Miller, Daniel Phoenix, James Watson, Paschal N. Smith, David Brooks, Robert Bowne, Jonathan Lawrence, Joshua Sands, William W. Gilbert, Anthony Post, Thomas Ivers, Daniel Nevin, Archibald Currie, William Nelson, Nathaniel Hazard, Adam Gilchrist, Esq. Jacobus Van Zandt, Alexander Stewart, Alexander Robertson, William Wilcocks, John Wiley, Isaac Gouverneur.
