A Rear End Collision at the Terminal Junction East of the Hempfield Tunnel Last Evening.
Yesterday evening two freight trains on the Baltimore & Ohio track just east of the Hempfield tunnel came together with a great crash, the rear train running into the front one and wrecking several cars badly.
As usual, nobody in the service of the company knew anything. A visit to the scene of the wreck, however, revealed a scene of great confusion. The cars were piled up on the track in such a way that when Capt. Charles Adams's train due from Pittsburgh at 7 p. m. arrived at the scene it was necessary to transfer the passengers. A special car was sent out and everybody on the train was brought into town. The mails and baggage were left, however, until after midnight. In the meantime the "Cannon Ball" was also held up by the wreck, as well as several freight trains besides those involved in the rear end collision. Both passenger trains got through about midnight.
Nobody was seriously hurt by the accident, for a wonder. It was one of the most costly of such a character, however. The wreck train was sent out about 8 o'clock, and cleared the track as quickly as possible. The "Cannon Ball" left for the west at 2:20 a. m.
