Yesterday morning old man Linton started from Jameson's wharf with his derelict schooner Experiment, himself captain and crew, for Mill Bay, Saanich Inlet, to load lumber at Mr. Sayward's former mill site. After running foul of the Beaver and threatening other vessels with a collision, he finally brought her upon the rock near Hospital Point, where she still remains. It is a question as to whether the authorities ought to allow Linton to go outside and attempt to sail a vessel of nearly seventy-five tons without help of any sort, as the chances are very much in favor of the schooner coming to grief and the old man losing his life.
The old schooner Experiment managed to get off the rock near Hospital Point at high water Friday night. Yesterday morning she grounded on the other side of the point opposite, and later on got adrift while her owner was ashore. He boarded her, however, and managed to bring her to an anchor which is only a piece of old boiler iron attached to a few feet of chain and a piece of rope. Should the old man succeed in getting the vessel out of the harbor, he is almost certain to come to grief outside, and the authorities should see to it that he be not allowed either to obstruct the harbor or to run the very great risk of getting drowned outside, as he can scarcely be compos mentis when he talks largely of getting a cargo for San Francisco and then loading wheat for the old country.
