"Opportunities and Responsibilities for Meeting Manpower Needs" will be the theme of an Institute for Guidance and Employment Specialists on March 10 at School Service Center.
The Institute, co-sponsored by the Gary Urban League in co-operation with the Gary Public Schools, is from 1:00 - 4:00 p. m.
Following a keynote address at the general opening assembly, a film entitled, "You Were There" will be shown. The movie places emphasis upon increasing demands of employers for qualified workers in expanding job classifications.
A special feature of the Institute will be the opportunities for wholesale exchanges of information and experiences by persons in guidance and counseling; personnel management, job placement and labor-management relations in two workshop groups.
Each workshop will simultaneously discuss "What are the implications involved with respect to education, training and vocational opportunities in view of significant developments which are placing increased emphasis on the quality of our labor force and causing further changes in its occupational distribution, age, sex and racial composition?"
The three sub-topics for further discussion are:
(1) In view of the increasing demands among employers for workers with various occupational skills, how are Gary's schools accepting the challenge for meeting manpower needs?
(2) what are the important problems experienced by employers and job placement agencies in effectively utilizing manpower resources on the basis of individual merit?
(3) Considering employment trends and manpower needs, what are the areas for more effective work relationships among schools, employers and community-serving agencies?
A final meeting of the Advisory Committee assisting in planning and program arrangements will be held March 3, at the School Service Center at 2:00 p. m.
Dr. Haron J. Battle, supervisor, secondary education, Gary Public Schools and Charles Graves, Jr., League vocational service secretary, are serving as Institute co-ordinators.
