Extract of a letter from Lexington, dated Aug. 11.
"On Wednesday evening last, an unfortunate affair took place between the wife of a Mr. Phelps of Madison county, and one of his sisters. The occasion of this shocking circumstance was caused by some money being missed out of the desk, belonging to Mr. Phelps's mother. Mrs. Phelps and the sister criminated each other: a violent quarrel arose between them; each resorted to sticks, and after fighting some time, the sister went out and sat in a chair by the door, and wished to compromise the business; Mrs. Phelps told her that if she did not throw her stick away immediately, she would make her do it in the shortest manner: and immediately took down a musket, which being perceived by another of Mr. Phelps's sisters, she immediately jumped in between them, and endeavored to turn the muzzle; but she fired, and lodged the contents, one bullet and ten buck shot, in the body of her antagonist, who expired in two hours after. She remained in the house until the corpse was laid in the coffin, when enquiring of one of her neighbours if she would be hanged, and being answered in the affirmative, she took an opportunity of making her escape, and had not been heard of on Saturday last."
