GLADEWATER, Tex., Nov. 17 — (AP) — Surrounded by tombstones, an oil well today flowed in the very center of the Rosedale cemetery, one mile east of here.
Brought in late yesterday by the Circle Oil Company of Houston, the well, under heavy gas pressure, flowed today beside hundreds of graves, overshadowed by tall pine trees. More than a year ago the task of securing the signatures of lot owners to an agreement to drill the well was started.
The Cemetery Association was organized in 1911 by Mrs. A. F. Beamer, president and Mrs. L. J. Everett, chairman. The lots are the property of prominent East Texans and long-time residents of this section.
The cemetery officials tonight said their burial ground was probably the only one in the United States that is self-supporting with a treasury fund.
