The Impeachment Matter - Meeting
of the Cabinet and Mr. Nasby - How
the Democracy Take It.

WASHINGTON, D. C.,
March 8, 1868.

The most affectin time I ever eggs
perienced in this wale o' tears, wuz in
Washington last nite. His Eggslency
telegrafft me tu come on ta Washington.
and I obayed. I hevn't tied much
tu him recently, but I coodeunt forgit
that he first gave me the offis I live
on, that his hohored name is at the
bottom of the commishun I hold, and
I felt that I ought at least tu be with
him while he wuz dissolutin. I de-
termined that he should dror his last
offishal breath on tu my faithful buz-
zum.

I arrived here, and at wunst per-
ceaded tu the Executive Mansion. It
wuz a familyer scene. Ther wuz Sew-
ard, Randall, Secretary Welles and
the President, and all uv em graver
than the stately raven uy the stately
days uv yore. The President was a
tryin tu keep a stiff upper lip, but I
cood see teers a follerin each other
adown his holler cheeks in rapid suc-
cession. "He's a goner," sez I, "no
man kin stand that drain on his
flooids. No matter how much he may
take in, that pace will kill any one."

The President was a reedin tele-
grams and letters, and they wuz not
uv a carikter tu pleeze him. The first
wuz from August Belmont, and red
thus:

"I hev, ez yoo know, the highest
possible regard for yooreggslency,
and shel regret exceedingly to see yoo
depriyed uv yoor high offis; but, reelly,
yoo kin seacely eggspect the Democ-
risy tu embarrass themselvas by es-
pousin yoor coz. The fact is, no par-
ty hevin fucher before it kin tie it-
sel tu a ded past. The teemster
draws a sigh ouer a ded mule, but as
a ded mule can't draw his cart, he
naturally turns his eyes onto them
still possest uv vitiality. I hope yoo
see the pint without my explainin it.
Excuse me for comparin yoo tu a ded
mule, but the simile wuz the fust that
segested itself tu me.

With profound respect, I am, ect.

"P. S. - Should biznis call me tu
Tennessee, I shel do myself the honor
tu call on yoo in yoor dignified retire-
ment."

The President wiped an avalanche
uy teers wich follered the reedin uy
this unfeelin letter, and the next wuz
opened.

"Mayesvile, Ky., Feb. 30, '68.

"Wood a regiment uv Irish raised
in this place be uv any servis? Anser!
J. A."

Sez Randall, "the whole county
only polls 500 votes, and that cuss hez
bin borm me for a place in the de-
partment for ovor a year. Drive on."

The next wuz from Vallandigum:

"Since the disgraceful exhibishun
voor friends made uy themselves at
the Philadelphia Convenshn, I didn't
consider myself bound tu yoo. I, ez
yoo know, never took any stock in
half and half mixters. My defeet by
Thuaman hezn't increased my love
for yoo aud yoors. I hev no ob-
jecshn tu yoor holdin yoor seat tu the
end uv yoor term, but reeiy its a
matter uv but little consekence tu me.
Shood yoo passthro Dayton on yoor
way tu Tennessee, I shood be glad tu
extend the hospitalities uv my hum-
ble house tu yoo."

The next wuz
from Franklin
Peerse, and wuz dated at Concord,
N. H.

"I feel for yoo; that is, I feel for
yoo on general prineiples. (Thad.
Stevens, permit me tu say, in paren-
thasis, hez bin feelin for yoo, and hez
at last, I am satisfied, found yoo.) I
feel for yoo ez I do for every man who
hez a offis and is obleeged tu leave it.
Nevertheless, I can't help yoo. I
wood, but yoo see we hev all we kin
do tu help ourselves. Of course yoo
don't eggspect the Dimocrisy tu take
any part in the struggle between yoo
and Congris. Elected ez a Republi-
kin, with Republikins in yoor Cabi-
net, the Dimocrisy, while they ap-
plaud wat yoo hev done, can't uv
coorse make yoor quarrel theirs.
When yoo leave Washington for Ten-
nessee, can't yoo take Concord in yoor
way? I hev no objecshn tu minglin
teers with yoo."

The next was from a western poli-
tishen, lately appinted postmaster:

"Sir: I return the appintment yoo
gave me last month, with loathin and
skorn. I survived the Noo Orleans
and Memphis massacres - yoor opposi-
tion tu the will uv Congris, and all
the other damnin iniquities uv yoor
most damuable admiuistration, but
this last attempt tu hist Stanton I
cau't indorse; therefore I bolt. Yoor
suecessor will, I hope, do me the jus-
tis, and likewise th Senit."

Sez Randall: "That cur bored me
for better nor a veer for appintment,
but the Senit wou't confidm him. Oh,
what hevent yoo tu undergo! Oh,
Johnson, from what hev yoo es-
caped!"

A prominent Eastern Democrat
wrote ez follows:

"Defy Congriss, and let em impeech
yoo. Ef they shood hist yoo, all the
better. It will be an inmen-e help
toward the eleckshun uy McClellan.
Think how much yoo kin do fur the
coz in this way, and stand firm. Visit
Hartford on yoor way tu Tennessee.

A Western Demokrat wrote:

"We all applaud yoor courage and
resolushun. Ef the Rump impeech
and remove yoo, and it makes certain
the triumph uv Pendleton. Stand by
yor colors. Yoor impeechment is
our hope. Shel we see yoo at Cim-
cinnati on yoor way tu Tennes-
