WASHINGTON. Jan. 8.-(A)
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has unanimously approved legislation authorizing the State Department's "Voice of America" foreign broadcasts.
The committee acted after being informed that the American Ambassador to Iran, George V. Allen, is Secretary of State Marshall's choice for the long-vacant post of Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs. In this position, Allen would have charge of the radio programs and related activities.
Administration officials said that President Truman is expected to send Allen's nomination to the Senate soon.
ALLEN APPOINTED
WASHINGTON. Jan. 8.-(P)—
President Truman today announced he is appointing George V. Allen, now Ambassador to Iran, as Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs.
Presidential Press-Secretary Charles G. Ross made the announcement for the President.
Allen, a native of Durham, N. C., will succeed William Benton, who recently resigned.
The post carried with it direction of the State Department's "Voice of America" broadcasts and other foreign information programs.
Allen, 44, was understood to be Secretary of State Marshall's choice for the job.
There was no immediate announcement of a successor to Allen as Ambassador to Iran.
