Full Text

REPUBLIC INJURED.—We regret to learn that the steamer Republic, upon her trip up, just above the mouth of the Cadron, ran foul of a snag, by which she was much injured. She was immediately run upon a bar to keep her from sinking. Most of her cargo will be lost. Accidents of this kind, we lament, are of too frequent occurrence on our Western waters, and especially the Arkansas river. Every means should be devised to protect boats from these accidents. The loss, attending them, would amply repay the trouble and expense of ridding our river of those impediments, which prove so destructive to our steamers. When shall we begin to receive the benefit of our share of the appropriation for cleaning out the Western rivers, voted by Congress some time since? We understand the Republic was insured.
