They write from Midhurst in Sussex that on
Friday last the remains of the late Lord Viscount
Montague were met on the road by a numerous
train of his Lordship's tenants, tradesmen, and
others, and attended to Cowdray, his Lordship's
late seat; where the corpse lay in state that night,
and the next day was interred with great funeral
solemnity in the cloister of his own parish church
of Eastbourne according to his particular orders;
his pall was supported by 12 of the poorest old men
that could be picked out of his neighbourhood,
who had a strong suit of clothes & ten guineas each
man. What was the concourse of people, who
flocked together upon this mournful occasion to
testify their sorrow, some for the loss of an hospi-
table neighbour, some of an easy and kind landlord,
and some of an indulgent master; but the most
affecting scene of all was the crowds of poor who
assembled from all quarters to pay the tributary
tear of gratitude to their deceased benefactor, whose
liberality they had experienced for a long series of
years, but more especially in these trying times of
scarcity and distress: a sight so woeful has not
been beheld in that country since the death of the
late Duke of Richmond: but a ray of hope breaks
through the gloom that this loss will be repaired by
his Lordship's son and successor, who it is not
doubted will equal his deceased Lord and father in
charity, generosity, and goodness.
