URGES CONSIDERATION OF FORESTS ALONG WITH OTHER CROPS
Mount Berry, Ga., July 24. -
Speaking before a group of North Georgia farmers and students tonight, F. K. Holder, a graduate forester and president of the Berry Forestry Club, urged the consideration of timber as a crop along with cotton, corn and other agricultural products.
"There is no reason," he said, "why by careful thought and cultivation Timber some day should not prove as profitable crop as cotton. Fire is its only hazard and a little human effort and legislation will soon do away with that.
"The right handling of home forests already is a matter of recognized importance in farm management and with the inevitable increase in the price of timber it will become more so.
"In Georgia, most of the timber land is in the hands of farmers. Its future development and value depends in a large degree upon them. Market conditions and means of marketing may not be very conducive of good forest management, but when the farmers realize the asset they have in timber the market will come to them. They must learn to handle timber properly. Carelessness in production never has attracted markets," he asserted.
The Berry Forestry Club offered to assist any farmer in developing productive forests, following the address by Mr. Holder.
