LATEST FROM THE ARMY.
We stop the press to announce to our readers the following intelligence from General Harrison's army. It is more pleasing and satisfactory than what we have before received.
By the arrival of a gentleman from Cleveland, which place he left the 7th instant, we have received some further particulars of the disaster to our troops under General Winchester, at the river Raisin. He informs that the evening before he left Cleveland, Major Darragh of General Perkins's brigade, arrived there from head quarters, and mentioned to him that several Frenchmen whom General Harrison had sent out to the river Raisin and Malden, to obtain information, had returned, and state that from the number of our men who are prisoners at Malden, together with those who escaped and had arrived safe, there were not more than one hundred missing.
They also inform that the action was very warmly contested for a considerable time, our men repeatedly driving the British regulars & militia, and once or twice had possession of their artillery, but fresh reinforcements continually arriving, our men were obliged to yield principally from the want of ammunition. It had been represented to General W. the evening before, that he would be attacked the next morning, but he did not use the necessary precaution in fortifying his Camp, nor supplying his men with a sufficiency of ammunition, although his conduct during the action was that of a brave Officer. It is confidently stated that he is a prisoner. One of the Frenchmen whom General Harrison sent out for information, had remained concealed at his brother's at Malden for three or four days, and states that of one Company of Artillery of 66 men, which left Malden previous to the action, only 16 returned, all the rest being killed.
There can be no doubt but the enemy's loss was equal to ours.
Major Darragh mentioned that this disaster, instead of discouraging our men at Head-Quarters, had rather stimulated them to a desire of pushing on to avenge the death of their brethren.
General Harrison was to take up his line of march from the Rapids on the 12th instant.
